Assassination Rogue Guide

Welcome to the guide for Assassination Rogue in 8.2. If you’re looking for a good introduction to playing Assassination in Battle for Azeroth PvE, you’ve come to the right place.

New patch new essences. 8.2 lets us enhance our rotations with some brand new azerite related abilities.

Introduction

Assassination is seen as the go to easy mode spec among all classes. This is due to the low entry level and fairly straight forward rotation. We pack a lot of single target damage with our basic tool kit. In addition to our single target we have some consistent cleave potential with our DoT orientated kit and talents to support that. Assassination still retains a lot of similarities to how it was in Legion due to minimal changes moving from expansion to expansion.

Talents

Toxic blade has cemented its place as the go to choise for assassination.

Single Target

  • Level 15: Elaborate Planning
  • Level 30: Master Assassin or Subterfuge
  • Level 45: Vigor
  • Level 60: Optional
  • Level 75: Optional
  • Level 90: Toxic Blade
  • Level 100: Poison Bomb

Multi Target(f.ex 5 man instances)

  • Level 15: Elaborate Planning
  • Level 30: Subterfuge
  • Level 45: Vigor
  • Level 60: Optional
  • Level 75: Optional
  • Level 90: Toxic Blade
  • Level 100: Poison Bomb

You should always run a simulation of your character to check which talents are best for you.

Gearing & Stats

Gearing in Battle for Azeroth should be more straight forward. Blizzard is trying to make item level always be the primary deciding factor and limit your ways of obtaining loot by having only personal loot, and not allowing trading of all pieces. We still have our preferred stats, but they should not be as decisive as in legion.

“Stat Weights,” is a term you might have heard many times. What is actually being discussed, is scale factors, because they usually change the moment you change a piece of equipment. This is why we recommend that you sim your character to compare items rather than relying on weights.

For stats you should be aiming for the following:

Single Target

  • Agility
  • Haste
  • Critical Strike
  • Mastery
  • Versatility

Multi Target

  • Agility
  • Critical Strike
  • Mastery
  • Versatility
  • Haste

For your food buff while raiding you should enjoying a Feast. If you’re unable to use a Feast, the food for the secondary stat that your scale factors says is highest.

For potions you have to choose depending on the situation. Potion of Unbridled Fury is the pick for 1-3 targets. For more targets you want to use a Potion of Empowered Proximity.

For your flask you should always use Greater Flask of the Currents.

For your ring enchants you should use the secondary stat that your scale factors says is highest.

For your weapon enchants you should use one Force Multiplier and one secondary stat enchant that your scale factors says is highest. A likely pair for single target would be Force Multiplier and Quick Navigation.

Azerite Powers and Essences

These are some of the powers and essences you want to aim for for the respected encounter styles. Relative strength of the essences is still a work in progress as they are still new. Take these as first look into them.

Single Target

Major Essences

  • Blood of the Enemy: A nice and solid boost to both critical chance and damage as a separate cool down. Especially good for progression where you will often face a burst window on a set timer.
  • Condensed Life-Force: A very powerful on demand damage button once rank three. Good for required windows like Blood of the Enemy.
  • Memory of Lucid Dreams: Another extra cool down that gives a rush of energy for a period. Nice for energy management or longer damage windows.

Minor Essences

  • Essence of the Focusing Iris: A nice haste buff for the entire encounter when you are able to keep beating a single target.
  • Memory of Lucid Dreams: A nice rotation easing minor in the form of energy restoration.
  • The Crucible of Flame: A totally passive damage proc on single target.

Outer Ring Azerite Powers

  • Double Dose: Bread and butter of the poison build. Very strong on single/low target situations where you do not use Fan of Knives.
  • Nothing Personal: Another strong single target contender. Have at least one, but more does not hurt.
  • Shrouded Suffocation: These are still the go to traits for Exsanguinate and can serve you well in cleave situations.

Inner Ring Azerite Powers

  • Gutripper: Offers a tad bit of execute.
  • Heed My Call: Good on single target and aoe.
  • Overwhelming Power: Strongest pick on single target but not as useful on aoe.

Multi Target

Major Essences

  • Blood of the Enemy: A nice and solid boost to both critical chance and damage as a separate cool down. Attractive mythic+ option as an on demand button.
  • Condensed Life-Force: Solid for mythic enviroment aswell once at level three.
  • Essence of the Focusing Iris: Second extra button for bigger pulls. A simple on demand hand cannon.

Minor Essences

  • Memory of Lucid Dreams: Not as useful on bigger pulls where energy regeneration isn’t an issue, but overall alright for mythic+
  • Purification Protocol: A solid aoe damage proc.
  • The Unbound Force: Has a lot of burst potential if you can time the proc with your pulls.

Outer Ring Azerite Powers

  • Blightborne Infusion: Having a lot of additional critical strike rating is great when you are using Fan of Knives as your builder.
  • Echoing Blades: Extremely potent trait for mythic plus enviroment where you have plenty of targets and high critical strike chance. Possibly silly burst potential with new essences.
  • Shrouded Suffocation: Highly sought after in mythic+ enviroment. Constant restealthing makes this trait a top choise.

Inner Ring Azerite Powers

  • Heed My Call: Good on single target and aoe.
  • Overwhelming Power: Fairly good on single target but not as useful on aoe.
  • Unstable Flames: More crit means more combo points.

For more information you can check out Herodamage for more traits or run a simulation for your character and the item(s) in question.
